The Missing Piece Wedding at Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas

Everything about this wedding was large: Julian and Karla’s love and laughter, the distances guests traveled- from Mexico to the Middle East and back, the artists and performances that collaborated, and that double dance party until 2 am. Although beneath those obviously exciting elements is the deeper immediate connection I shared with them and the thoughtfulness inspiring the grand celebration they threw. The best depiction is this annotation they wrote and printed up inside Shel Silverstein’s The Missing Piece as a gift to every guest (I’m grateful to have received one too!). It’s substantial and worth every word.

Whether through some sort of cultural evolution or through the very nature which makes us human, we find ourselves looking for what can only be described as happiness in the form of someone or something else. Time and time again we search for people, adventures and curiosities which give us some satisfaction quantified in short or long durations of time. Discovering that these experiences can be uncomfortable and yes, in other cases sustaining, they are either way finite.

Placing our connections and happiness in finite things leads us to unsatisfactory and often painful outcomes. The realization which we are seeking is our “missing piece” but to find it is to look within and locate that infinite element which is the consistency of love itself. Once discovered we are able to share that truth which is genuinely us with everything and everyone we encounter.

The surface of this divine spark which essentially makes up our true self is often scratched, rarely realized but more frequently forgotten. Our desire is that the love and support of people like you and the bond which we share with each other helps us find, realize and honor our missing but more often forgotten beautiful and perfect piece, or own individual self.
